Overcoming Water Treatment Challenges with LumTech
The Challenges
One of Perth’s busiest car wash sites faced significant challenges with low RO output and inadequate carbon filtration, leading to damaged membranes. Despite previous system upgrades by others, the issue persisted, causing excessive downtime and expenses. Additionally, the increased demand for soft water overwhelmed the old system, and the soft water boost pumps were not up to the task.

LumTech to the Rescue
To address these issues, LumTech conducted a comprehensive assessment of the site’s water usage and quality needs. Based on our findings, we recommended and installed an upsized carbon filter while retaining the existing head. We also introduced a standalone RO unit with four membranes, more than doubling the site’s RO water production. Additionally, we optimized the layout by removing an unused air compressor and adding extra balance pipes for the four RO storage tanks.

Additional Upgrades
We replaced the old softener system, retaining the existing vessels, and installed new digital Pentair heads, new media, brine tanks, and pickup assemblies. The existing pressure system was upgraded to two Grundfos VFD-controlled units, which work in tandem to share the load during peak periods and alternate during quieter times. This upgrade significantly improved upon the previous MAS control pumps, which were inadequate for the system’s demands.

Advanced Monitoring
When the site started experiencing incoming water supply issues, LumTech’s owner, Steve, implemented a smart monitoring solution to identify and resolve the problem. The monitoring system, which was both specialized and cost-effective, allowed the site to automatically notify designated persons of any issues via SMS, email, or automated phone calls.
The smart monitoring system revealed that during peak periods, the site was consuming more water than it produced, causing the water tanks to empty and the RO unit and auto wash equipment to shut down. By analyzing data from various sources, including tank levels, RO unit operation, and boost pump faults, we pinpointed the issue to debris from recent water works partially blocking the RPZ pre-filter, reducing maximum flow. This quick, inexpensive repair was made possible by LumTech’s remote monitoring setup.
