Electronics Wizardry & “Pulse” Integration
SCOPE
LumTech was called to the site to assess and prepare all Self-Serve Bays, Vacuums, Fragrance Vacs, and Carpet Vacs for the upcoming installation of the Pulse system.
“Pulse is a complete cloud-based real-time Car Wash Management system that provides car wash owners, operators and investors with the systems and technology to manage and understand almost every aspect of day-to-day site operations from single Express Car Wash sites to multi-site Full Service Car Wash operations”.
Additionally, we were tasked with repairing any faulty equipment.
The existing setup was complex, involving a full-size Siemens PLC even in the Vacuums, leading to various states of disrepair.
With LumTech’s extensive expertise in Industrial Automation & Electronics, we eagerly took on the challenge of untangling this intricate situation.
CONSIDERATIONS
After conducting a thorough inspection and assessment, we presented the client with two options:
Either repair everything to restore the existing system, which would involve replacing several HMI units and a few PLCs at a significant cost, or simplify the setup by converting all equipment to operate with standard rotary switches and basic timers.
Recognizing that sometimes simplicity trumps complexity, particularly for Self-Serve Bays & Vacuums, the client chose the latter option.
STARTING FRESH
We carefully removed all PLC components and remapped the necessary signals to ensure smooth operation.
To keep costs down, LumTech offered our own V1 prototype Bay timers, which serve as an excellent alternative to the costly original Jim Coleman timers.
These basic timers fulfil all the essential requirements, such as:
- One output
- One Coin/Card input
- Countdown display
- Time remaining alert
We installed these timers across all Self-Serve Bays, achieving great success.
WHEN A MORE COMPLEX TIMER IS NEEDED
During our inspection of the Fragrance Vacs & Shampoo Vacs, we identified the need for a timer with additional Inputs & Outputs.
We presented the client with two options:
Retrofitting LED 6S timers or having LumTech design and build a new prototype timer with enhanced functionality.
Given the time available but budget constraints, the client chose to wait for our new prototype.
PROTOTYPING
We swiftly got to work on creating a Timer that:
- Fits within the existing cabinet
- Matches the original small cutout for the display on the door
- Supports all necessary Inputs & Outputs for the Fragrance & Shampoo Vacs
- Integrates seamlessly with other equipment, including Bays and DogWash systems
During these works, the sites fabricator started modifying the existing doors to give a cleaner look.
LUMTECH TIMER V3
In a short period, we developed enough prototypes for installation. Our client was eager to be the first to trial these timers, understanding that some bugs might need addressing along the way.
UP & RUNNING
LumTech successfully:
- Removed all existing PLC Circuitry & HMI components
- Tidied up the existing wiring
- Installed new, simpler, more cost-effective timers
- Assisted Pulse with the installation & integration of their “Beacon” units
